Cat’s Best Original Clumping Cat Litter is very well-reviewed by customers, and we like it too.
It’s best for eco-conscious cat owners who:
- Own a single cat, or
- Own multiple cats who have their own litter boxes
If your cats share a litter box though, it’s not great. Lots of cats peeing in the same tray can prevent the litter from clumping.
If you have cats that share a litter box, have a look at the best cat litter for multiple cats.

About Cat’s Best
Cat’s Best is made by the worlds leading plant fibre technolgy company, J. Rettenmaier & Söhne. This company researches and develops technologies using plant fibres.
In the case of Cat’s Best, they use a wood fibre technology they call, ‘Intelligent Capillary System’.
This is how they describe it;
“The active wood fibres are able to absorb urine and odours at lightning speed and bind them. Unlike mineral litter, Cat’s Best is a new generation of cat litter…”
Better For the Environment
Cat’s Best is also better for the environment.
It’s a byproduct of the timber industry so they don’t cut down trees to make it. On top of that, they only use wood from, sustainable sources.
And because it’s wood, it’s biodegradable. So you can either compost it or dispose of it with your green waste instead of sending it to landfill.
How We Tested
At Pet Checkers, we look after a lot of cats. This gives us the luxury of being able to run pretty thorough tests.
We wanted to see how Cat’s Best performed in both single and multi-cat environments. So we chose two of our best customers;
- One with a single cat, and
- One with three cats
We ran the test over 4 weeks, visiting each customer twice a day to scoop and clean their litter boxes. Once in the morning and again in the evening.
Over these 4 weeks, we graded the cat litter on;
- How much dust the litter contained – dust isn’t good for your cat’s respiratory system so we didn’t want to see a lot.
- How well it clumped – the better it clumps, the easier it is to scoop.
- Odour control – no one likes a smelly litter box!
- How much it tracked – we wanted to see how much litter our cats walked around the house after going to the toilet.

Cat’s Best Original Clumping Cat Litter Review

After 4 weeks of testing Cat’s Best Original Cat litter, here are our thoughts.
Very Little Dust
Cat’s Best Original contains very little dust. We expected to see some when pouring the litter into the litter box but there was barely any at all.
They say it’s down to their, ‘Special Filter Process’ for removing dust.
Clumps Well, Under Single Cat Use

Cat’s Best clumps well during our tests. That said, it’s best to leave it a while before scooping them out though. Giving it a bit of time allows the clumps to dry and harden, making them easier to scoop.
That said, for cats that share a litter box, we found that if clumps had set but got wet again, they turned soft and mushy. This made scooping a little more difficult.
Good Odour Control
Out of the bag, Cat’s Best Original has the faintest woody smell. That said, you need a good whiff to smell it.
When it’s wet with cat pee, the litter does a good job of containing the smell. We didn’t ever smell that the litter tray had been used and our test customers said the same.
It contained the smell, even with three cats sharing the litter box.
“Even with my three cats sharing litter boxes, they didn’t ever smell..”
We took things a step further and had a good whiff of the soiled litter. When it was wet, it smelled like wet wood and ammonia but it wasn’t strong. When the clumps were dry, the smell was very faint.
It Does Track a Bit, Especially With Long-Haired Cats

The individual pieces of Cat’s Best Original litter are very light, and some are small.
As such, we found that it did track a bit as cats left their litter box. This was especially true for long-haired breeds. We noticed it could stick in their fur and get carried around the house. So it didn’t only end up on the floor, we also found it where they slept.
This is what Sarah, one of our test customers said;
“Sid and Bungle are both short-haired cats and the litter is fine for them. It tracks a bit but it’s not bad.
But Chuck has super long fur and the litter sticks to the fur on his legs and his bum so he carries it everywhere. It’s a bit annoying…”
If your cats are fluff balls, you might be best choosing another litter.
It Lasts Well
Because Casts Best clumps, you can scoop them, leaving the clean litter in the tray.
We found we didn’t have to clean and change the litter box as often as other cat litters.
For a single cat household, a 10-litre bag of Cat’s Best lasted well over a month. For three cats, it lasted three weeks.
Flushable and Compostable
Cat’s Best Original Clumping cat litter is flushable. This makes disposing of it dead easy.
That said, you should only ever flush the clumps. Don’t ever flush cat poo down the toilet. It can contain a parasite that UK water treatment plants aren’t equipped to kill.
And because it’s wood-base it’s biodegradable so you can compost it. Or, instead of sending it to landfill, you can dispose of it with your green waste.

Positive Reviews
5.0 out of 5.0 stars“I can’t believe this cat litter, it’s amazing! I had to change my litter tray every other day, due to my cat having to take water tablets, and of course the smell.
I’ve not changed the litter in 2 months, just topped it up. The urine forms a ball so you can lift it out. There is absolutely no smell at all, it’s amazing, can’t praise it enough…”
5.0 out of 5.0 stars“This is literally the best litter.
The 10L package lasted me for weeks. The clumps stay small and are easy to remove and it absorbs liquids and odours very well. The fact that it’s flushable is also fantastic, makes getting rid of the mess quick and easy.
This is absolutely worth the money…”
5.0 out of 5.0 stars“Top notch item and excellent value for money!
Works better and lasts longer than other cat litter. It’s far better at clumping with liquids and solids but does not “glue” itself to the bottom of the litter tray. This makes it far easier to scoop and clean.
The added bonus is superior odour control.
We have seven cats and this makes the job of cleaning the litter boxes far smoother, neater, and easier. I highly recommend this product to anyone who has cats who use indoor litter trays…”
Negative Reviews
1.0 out of 5.0 stars“I have just changed my kittens litter tray and used this for the first time. He’s used it straight away and after one use it’s all over the hallway and living room. Wherever he has walked. It sticks to his paws and tracks through the flat.
Would not recommend as too lightweight…”
1.0 out of 5.0 stars“With this litter being on the expensive side we expected it to be great but unfortunately it wasn’t for us.
The pros:
– Great clumping, great absorbancy and it’s easy to remove
The one, BIG con:
– Somehow we found litter all over the house. It would stick to our cat and he would transfer it everywhere..”
