Best Best Vacuum For Pet Hair (2017 Update). Find the Right Pet Hoover For You.

best no pull dog harness

We all love our pets but WOW, cleaning up their fur is a never ending battle – especially if you own more than one.

It gets everywhere!

Your carpet, your furniture, and your furnishings can get covered in it. Not only that, it can be a real pain in the behind to clean up.

So, what’s a animal lover to do?

Well, we’ve been asked this a number of times so we decided to create a buying guide and find the best vacuum for pet hair.

But what makes us so qualified to review vacuums? Surely you’d be better looking at Which? or a consumer report website, right?

As a company that lives in other people homes for a living, we have used literally hundreds of different vacuums and other pet related cleaning products. So we’re actually pretty well versed in this type of thing!

We’ve taken our experience, talked to our customers and other users, consulted industry experts and consumer reports to bring you what we think are the best hoovers for pet hair.

Best Vacuum For Pet Hair: Our Top Picks

We’ve spoken with our customers, manufacturers and everyday users, we’ve called on our own experiences and actually tested these products ourselves in our attempt to find the best vacuum cleaner for pet hair.

1. Shark NV680UKT Powered Lift-Away True Pet Vacuum

(Click the ‘Play’ button to watch the video)

best vacuum cleaner for pet hairThe Shark Powered Lift-Away True Pet Vacuum has been certified by the British Allergy Foundation and accredited by the Good House Keeping Institute.

We think it’s pretty good too!

In fact, it’s our overall pick for the best pet vacuum.

With it’s anti-allergen ‘Complete Seal Technology’ it traps 99.9% of dust and allergens inside the vacuum.

What we really like about this pet hoover is that it features Shark’s ‘Lift Away Technology’. This means that the pod where all the debris is collected can lift away while the vacuum continues to work. This makes reaching those hard to get to places (like under the bed) and hoovering the stairs really easy.

It also features their Pet Power Brush which works specifically to pick up pet fur from carpets, upholstery, and furniture. It actually works really well.

Some people say the bin on the front is quite small and needs to be emptied quite regularly and the power cable is a little short but these aren’t really deal breakers, at least we don’t think so.

The Shark Lift-Away is the best pet hoover we’ve tested. Industry experts like it, our customers do and everyday users do too.

 2. Dyson DC41 Animal Cinetic Ball Upright Vacuum

(Click the ‘Play’ button to watch the video)

best hoover for pet hairDyson is always a popular choice when it comes to vacuums and their MK2 version of the original DC41 comes with the word ‘Animal’ in the name.

This is because it is made for pet owners.

That being said, we’d say that it’s one of the best all round vacuums you can buy and the ONLY reason it didn’t come out as the pet hair vacuum is that we really like the lift away technology of the Shark.

The Dyson DC41 MK2 has been certified Asthma and Allergen friendly by Allergy Standards and was also awarded a Which? Best Buy in 2016. And believe it or not, it has been commended by the Royal College of Chiropractors for preventing musculoskeletal discomfort while vacuuming.

It features a self-adjusting cleaner head which means that there is no loss of suction when going from carpets to hard floors. The brush bar in the cleaning head has also been upgraded with 20% more power so it drives the bristles deeper into your carpet which releases even more dirt and pet hair.

As well as coming with the attachments you expect to get with a Dyson vacuum the DC41 comes with tangle-free turbine tool that removes pet hair from carpets, furniture, and other upholstery.

It also comes with a 5-year guarantee which is a big plus over the Shark, which comes with a one year guarantee with the option to upgrade to a year plan.

We really like this vacuum but there are a few people that have reported issues including; having to empty to bin too often, being difficult maneuver and the suction being so strong that rugs and mats just stick to it. One person even said they gave up with it and bought the Shark vacuum.

We love it though.

3. VAX U90-MA-RE Air Reach Vacuum Cleaner Review

(Click the ‘Play’ button to watch the video)

best vacuum for pet hair UKNot only is the VAX U90 Air Reach one of the cheaper upright pet vacuums available, it’s also Amazon’s best seller!

As with all pet vacuums, the HEPA filter removes pet dander, pollen, and other allergens. It’s anti-bacterial too!

We are always surprised at just how light this VAX hoover is. It has all the capacity of an upright vacuum but its a third of the weight which makes moving it around and hoovering the stairs really easy – especially if you suffer back problems.

It has 2 cleaning modes – one for carpets and the other for hard floors which you can switch between with the flick of a switch.

The 10m power cord will save you from continuously having to plug it in and unplug it while your cleaning.

Like the other 2 uprights, the VAX comes with an extension for vacuuming pet hair from furniture, upholstery and other surfaces around the home.

As you’d expect from such a popular product, it does have its critics.

Complaints include that it feels a bit cheap, some customers have reported that the suction is so strong that it’s difficult to push and that it can lift the edges of the carpet in the corner of rooms, although we must say, we didn’t experience that issue when we used it.

For the price, we think it’s a really good product!

4. Dyson V8 Animal Cordless Vacuum Cleaner

(Click the ‘Play’ button to watch the video)

best cordless vacuum for pet harIf the price isn’t an issue and you want the very best cordless pet vacuum, then look no further.

With its big motors, powerful suction and accessories the Dyson V8 Animal is the best of the lot.

Like all pet vacuums, it comes with a HEPA filter.

You get 40 minutes of hoovering time from a full charge which should be enough time to clean the whole house. That being said, if you live in a really big house we’d recommend you get an upright, so you don’t run the risk of running out of charge.

What we really like about this machine is that it’ll turn into a small handheld vacuum so it’s ideal for hoovering the pet hair your furniture, quick clean and use in the car. It’s super light too so you can suck up the cobwebs in the corner of the ceiling really easily.

It comes with a 2-year guarantee from Dyson.

We LOVE the Dyson V8 animal. The only downside is the price as it is quite expensive. That being said, it’s well worth it.

5. GTECH Air Ram K9 Cordless Pet Vacuum

(Click the ‘Play’ button to watch the video)

cordless pet vacuumThe GTECH Air Ram K9 is a very popular cordless pet vacuum thanks to heavy TV advertisement.

With that being said it does come with a ton of 5-star customer reviews and is approved by Good House Keeping, and recommended by Trust Pilot.

It’s strong, lightweight, it moves easily between different floor types and it even comes with scented floral tabs inside the filter to remove any pet odours and leaves your room smelling fresh.

Like the Dyson, you get up to 40 minutes cleaning from a full charge and all the dirt is compressed into a capsule the head of the vacuum. It’s super easy to empty too.

The Air Ram K9 comes in 2 packages:

  • The Air Ram K9, or,
  • Air Ram K9 and K9 Multi.

The GTech Air Ram Multi is a handheld version of the cordless vacuum which we’d recommend for cleaning pet hair from your furniture and stairs.

At the time of writing there is a £100 between the K9 and K9 Multi which makes it more expensive than the Dyson and even with all its 5-star reviews, many users say they prefer Dyson’s suction and ‘all in one’ style.

You get the comfort of a 30-day guarantee when you order so if you’re not happy for any reason you’ll get a refund or exchange. On top of that GTech give you a 2-year guarantee against faults.

We think it’s a solid product!

6. AEG AG5022 Ultra-Power Cordless Vacuum Cleaner

(Click the ‘Play’ button to watch the video)

best cordless pet vacuum for pet hairAlthough the AEG AG5022 is substantially cheaper than the Dyson or the GTech, it is still a very good machine. After all, they are a German company and the Germans are well known for quality engineering!

And it comes with the Good House Keeping seal of approval.

It beats both the other vacuums when it comes to charging and running time. A 3.5 hour charge will give you up to 60 minutes of cleaning time whereas the Dyson and GTech will give you 40 minutes from a 4 hour charge. And because the battery is removable, you can buy a second one if you do a lot of cleaning and need more running time.

Featuring a 2 stage ‘easy clean’ filter, it’s ideal for pet owners and works well on all floor types. It’s lightweight too which makes pushing it around pretty easy.

Where is falls down against the others though is in the attachments. The Dyson V8 animal comes with an attachment for cleaning pet hair from your furniture and you have the option to upgrade with the GTech. But with the AEG you get nothing.

Still, it’s a fantastic product and at the time of writing, it’s around £100 cheaper than the others.

Well worth considering!

The Non Pull Dog Harness vs. Regular Ones

If your dog pulls a lot while you’re out walking, most ‘regular’ dog harnesses will only make the pulling even worse.

Because the only place you can attach a lead is right on top of their shoulder blades (see image).

Why does this make such a difference?

Well, a dog gets all of his pulling power from his shoulders and when you anchor a lead to that part of his body, you’re attaching yourself directly onto all of that power and strength.

Even smaller dogs like Jack Russels Terriers are incredibly strong which can make going for a walk really uncomfortable, so imagine fitting a harness like this to a dog that was bred for running and pulling, like a Siberian Husky or an Alaskan Malamute.

We’ve done it and let us tell you, it’s not fun!

A no pull harness on the other hand will significantly reduce this pulling and and make your walks much more comfortable – and as a result, more enjoyable.

Our favourite ones have to 2 places to clip your lead to. By attaching one end of your lead to the clip on your dogs back and another clip on or under his chest, you can essentially steer your dog. This makes him really easy to control because when he tries to pull, he just circles back to you.

Front led harnesses work well. These just have a single clip of the chest strap instead on on the shoulders.

What to Look For in an Anti Pull Dog Harness

When you’re looking for a dog harness for pulling poochies there are a few things you might like to consider.

There’s nothing scientific about this process, it’s just a case of finding what works for you and your pup.

Here are a few things to consider:

Is it Humane?

Believe it or not, there are companies that promote the use of collars, leads and harnesses that cause discomfort and pain to your dog when he pulls. (think shock collars!)

The thought process being that if it hurts when he pulls, he won’t pull.

Not only do we think this is inhumane, it can also make the pulling worse as your dog tries to escape the pain the or discomfort by pulling even harder, making the pain and discomfort worse still.

Is it Durable?

Durability is really important.

If your dog pulls really hard, you’ll want to invest in a harness that is well made and can stand up to the stresses it might be put under.

So our advice is don’t go cheap. With that being said, no pull dog harnesses aren’t that expensive.

Make Sure You Choose the Right Size

While conducting our research to find the best no pull dog harness we have heard a number of people talk about their dogs escaping from their harness.

Through speaking with manufacturers and pet shop workers we have found that this is very rarely a fault in the harness. It’s more a case of the owner choosing the wrong size of harness in the first place and then relying too heavily on the adjustments.

So make sure you choose the right size. Measure your dog and compare their measurements to the packaging.

All of the non pull harnesses we have reviewed come in a range of sizes so you should easily be able to find one that fits your dog.

Final Thoughts…

Trying to find the best no pull dog harness has been an interesting process.

There are some people that say they just don’t work, others say they have completely transformed the way their dogs walk.

We’re in the lucky position of being able to walk several different dogs a day on all kinds of different harnesses. As a result of conducting these dog harness reviews, we can say with absolute confidence that non-pull harnesses do work.

Issues arise (like the rubbing and continued pulling) when dog owners expect these devices to replace proper lead training which of course isn’t a realistic expectation.

These harnesses and good lead behavior should compliment each other, not replace each other.

What to Look For in a Pet Hoover

There are hundreds of pet vacuums on the market so trying to figure out which one is best for you might seem challenging. You could end up more confused that when you started.

So how do you go about figuring it out?

Well, here are a few things to consider;

Your Budget

The range of vacuum cleaners in huge, from budget ranges to the more expensive, high end models. There’s no point in looking at something that costs £350 if you’ve only got £100 to spend.

With that being said, don’t assume that the most expensive product is going to be the best one for you. Yes, you get what you pay for but there are other things to consider;

Your Living Space

Consider your home environment.

There’s not really much point in buying a really expensive, heavy duty pet hair vacuum with all the bells and whistles if you live in a small flat with laminated floors.

If you live in a small space, consider a smaller, lightweight vacuum like a cordless or hand held. They might not be as powerful or as sophisticated but you’ll probably not need all the features that comes with something so high end.

On the other side of the coin, if you live in a big house with thick, plush carpets then you might need something more powerful with a few more features.

HEPA Standard Filters

An air filter isn’t just a filter. The quality and efficiency of air filters vary greatly.

All the vacuums we have reviewed contain HEPA filters.

HEPA stands for High Efficiency Partliculate Air. In plain English, these filters are made from really fine mesh that trap harmful particles like pet dander, pollen and allergens. Pet vacuums must capture 99.97% of these particles.

It’s worth considering exactly what you want from your pet vacuum prior to buying one.

  • Your flooring – do you have carpets, laminate or a mixture of both? If you just have laminate or hard flooring you might choose something a bit less powerful. If you have lots of carpet then you might want something with a stiff carpet brush a powerful suction.
  • Your furnishings – do you hoover your furniture, rugs? What about the coving and ceiling corners? Some vacuums come with extensions and attachments that enable you to do this.
  • Where will you use the vacuum – Is it just for home use or will you be using it to get pat hair out of your car too? Some vacuums come with car kits included and some don’t, while they are an optional extra on others.
  • Are you just looking for something to clean up little messes? If so, a hand held pet vacuum might be the best option.

Dyson DC58 Animal Review

  1. Dyson DC58 Animal ReviewAgain the Dyson has come top of the list!

Designed for homes that have pets, the level of suction you get from the Dyson DC58 Animal is pretty much unmatched and is perfect for cleaning up pet hair and other mess from the furniture and upholstery.

One of the hardest things to do with a conventional vacuum is hoover the stairs which means pet hair and allergens are often left there. Because the DC58  is so light and comfortable to use, it makes cleaning the stairs so, so easy.

A 3.5 hour charge will give you up to 26 minutes of cleaning time which is more than enough to clean up the odd spots around the house.

Honestly, we love it and if it’s just a hand held you’re after we fully recommend it. The only vacuum that beats it is the Dyson V6 Animal which was our top pick for the ‘best cordless vacuum for pet hair’ category.

So if you’re thinking about the DC58, consider the V6 animal because it gives you the best of both worlds – you get a cordless upright and a hand held in one machine with double the running time for not a lot more money.

Black & Decker Lithium Flexi Vac Review

Black & Decker PD1420LP-GB Lithium Flexi Vac ReviewThe Black & Decker Lithium Flexi Vac is a fantastic little tool that is perfect for cleaning up those little messes around the home.

It’s lightweight and cordless and has a 1.5m hose which makes hoovering up small messes around the home really easy. It also comes with a pet hair attachment tool which works really well so getting pet hair our of the carpet or off the furniture is no trouble at all.

The vacuum comes with a ‘triple action’ filter which captures the dust and allergens, keeping them in the machine so they don’t blow back out into your home.

The see though capsule that contains the mess is easy to empty too.

As it’s a hand held vacuum, the run time is 12.5 minutes and it does take 4 hours to get there. So if you have a bigger job, a powered upright or cordless vacuum will give you a longer run time and will probably be better suited.

Some people have complained that it’s quite noisy and the suction just isn’t strong enough when compared to other hand helds like the Dyson. That being said, the Dyson is around double the price.

So, if you can’t quite stretch your budget to the Dyson, the Black & Decker is well worth considering.

Vax HA85 Gator Pet Vacuum Review

Vax Gator Pet Vacuum ReviewThe cheapest of the 3, the Vax Gator Pet Vacuum is still a decent piece of kit that’s ideally suited to homes that have pets.

It’s really light and it’ll easily pick up normal messes like crumbs and cobwebs but it also has a turbo attachment that’ll pick up pet hair from your furniture and other surfaces around the house. You’ll also get a crevice tool so you can hoover those hard to reach places.

Like the Dyson, the Vax will give you 20 minutes of cleaning time and you can easily empty the debris by opening the ‘gator mouth’.

Some people complain that the suction is a little weak and the pet hair turbo attachment comes off it you’re too heavy handed so as one of our customers said, ‘it’s not a substitute for your main vacuum, it’s there for picking up the odd mess’.

Bearing that in mind, we think it’s pretty good for the money.
