Do I Really Need a Cat Litter Bin?

Technically, no, you don’t.

That said, they offer two main benefits;

1. They’re Convenient

You can scoop the poop straight into it instead of scooping into a bag, tying it up and taking it to the bin outside.

This might not seem like a big deal. But when it’s cold and wet outside and you’re still in your pyjamas you’ll learn to appreciate it!

2. They’re More Eco-Friendly

When scooping a litter tray, most of us scoop the waste into a poo bag and chuck it in the bin.

If you have one cat and scoop twice a day, that’s two plastic bags you throw away, every day.

Over a year, that’s 730!

For one cat!

Those with more cats and more litter boxes could double, even triple that number.

Many cat litter bins hold several weeks’ worth of waste before they need emptying. If you empty yours every two weeks, you’ll only throw away 26 plastic bags compared to 730.

Even if you empty it once a week, you’ll still reduce your plastic bag waste by 1,460%.

Why Trust Us?

Our team of pet carers have been cleaning cat litter boxes professionally (yep, we’re pros at this!) every day since 2013.

We know how unpleasant and mucky this job can be. So anything we can do to make it even a little bit easier, we’re all for it!

Also, because we’re ‘in the trade’ so to speak, we get to talk and consult with;

  • Hundreds of pet owners
  • Other pat carers
  • Behaviourists
  • Vets, and
  • Local and national cat charities, like Cats Protection and Lincoln Cat Care

This puts us in a unique position of being able to test products, both from a consumer and a ‘professional’ perspective.

How We Chose Which Cat Litter Disposal Bins to Test

Choosing which cat litter disposal systems to test was pretty easy as there aren’t many on the market.

When choosing which ones to test, we;

  • Used our 10+ years of experience to understand what we wanted to see in a product.
  • Spoke with our customers to get their thoughts and ideas.
  • Consulted with local cat fosterers.
  • Looked at customer reviews on websites like Amazon, Pet at Home and Zooplus.

This narrowed the choice down to 6 products.

How We Tested

We ran our test at the same time we tested to find the best cat litter.

We chose a few of our best, most trusted customers and tested different cat litter in their home, with their cats. At the same time, we left a cat litter bin next to the litter tray.

Twice a day, for 6 weeks, we scooped and cleaned their litter boxes. With each visit, we graded our chosen litter bins, on;

  • Their ease of use – scooping the litter tray isn’t a fun job and the point of a bin is to make the job easier.
  • Odour control – they had to lock in nasty smells.
  • Cost – while none of these products break the bank, some are more expensive than others. We wanted to see why.

Cat Litter Bin Reviews: A Closer Look at Our Top Picks

After testing 6 different products for 6 weeks (and then over the course of the following year), we chose 4 of the best.

1. Litter Genie Plus Review: Best For Single Cat Homes

Litter Genie Plus Cat Litter Bins
CriteriaRating
Cost4.0 out of 5.0 stars
Ease of Use4.5 out of 5.0 stars
Time Between Changes4.0 out of 5.0 stars
Odour Control4.5 out of 5.0 stars
Total Score4.2 out of 5.0 stars (4.2)

If you only have one cat at home, the Litter Genie Plus is our top pick.

It’s a full cat litter disposal system and comes with everything you need to get started, including;

  • The pail (or bin)
  • A refill (which lasts 30% longer than the standards ones)
  • A litter scoop, and
  • A scoop holder

It holds up to 14 days’ worth of waste. During our tests, did an excellent job of keeping odours locked in.

It’s easy to use too.

All you need to do is open the top, scoop in the waste litter, close the lid and pull the handle to drop the waste into the bin.

This keeps the waste sealed away, preventing nasty smells from escaping.

It’s 8″ x 8″ across and 17″ tall so it doesn’t take up too much room and you can buy it in black or silver.

The only downside is the cost of the refills, they’re super expensive. But that shouldn’t put you off because we found a hack that means you can use regular bin bags instead. See the video below:

2. Litter Genie XL Review: Best For Multi-Cat Households

Litter Genie XL cat litter disposal system
CriteriaRating
Cost4.0 out of 5.0 stars
Ease of Use4.5 out of 5.0 stars
Time Between Changes4.0 out of 5.0 stars
Odour Control4.5 out of 5.0 stars
Total Score4.2 out of 5.0 stars (4.2)

The Litter Genie XL comes with all the same features and works in exactly the same way as their Plus model. Apart from the fact that it’s 50% bigger which makes it better for multi-cat households.

It’s not that much more expensive than the plus model either.

That said, the more cats you have, the faster you’ll fill it and the more often you’ll need to empty it. Don’t expect to only have to empty it every two weeks if you have 3 cats. It’ll be a weekly job.

During our tests, we found that, for two cats, we needed to empty it every 10 – 14 days.

Again though, the downside is the cost of the refills. That said, if you use the hack we mentioned in the video above, you’ll never have to buy the refills.

3. Lillycat Cat Litter Disposal Bin Review: An Excellent Budget Option

Lillycat cat litter waste bin
CriteriaRating
Cost4.5 out of 5.0 stars
Ease of Use4.0 out of 5.0 stars
Time Between Changes4.0 out of 5.0 stars
Odour Control4.5 out of 5.0 stars
Total Score4.2 out of 5.0 stars (4.2)

The Lillycat cat litter disposal bin is an excellent choice if you’re on a budget. It’s around £10 cheaper than the others on this list.

And it’s German engineered too so it’s very well designed and built.

Like the Litter Genie the litter (and the stink) is kept sealed within the unit. So when you open the lid to add more, you don’t get hit in the face with the smell.

It’s super easy to use. Push the big grey button and the top lid opens for you to drop in the waste. Once you have dropped the waste in, press the button again and the waste disappears into the sealed liner below.

The top lid has a double lock. It has a magnet and mechanical mechanism which means the waste litter is secure. This, combined with its multi-layered film filter, means the odour control is just as good as the Litter Genie.

The refills are much cheaper too!

When we tested it, we did find that the hole in the top is a bit small. Especially if we have a full scoop of waste litter. We often tipped waste litter onto the rim instead of getting it right in the hole. It wasn’t a big deal as the ring is smooth and easy to wipe clean. But if your cat pees a lot and makes big clumps, or has big poos, you might be best choosing another model.

For the money though, the Lillycat is excellent.

4. PetFusion Portable Cat Litter Disposal Review: No Need to Order Refills

PetFusion portable cat litter bin
CriteriaRating
Cost4.0 out of 5.0 stars
Ease of Use5.0 out of 5.0 stars
Time Between Changes4.0 out of 5.0 stars
Odour Control3.5 out of 5.0 stars
Total Score4.1 out of 5.0 stars (4.1)

As good as the Litter Genie is, the cost of refills, might put some off. In which case, have a look at the PetFusion portable cat litter disposal system.

It comes with 10 bags and you can buy their replacement bags for it. But they also make it clear that you can use regular bin bags if you prefer (just make sure they’re the right size).

It works like any other bin, as in, you open the top, drop in the waste and then lock the filtered lid shut using the handle.

Replacing the bags is dead easy. When putting a bag in, all you have to do is take out the removable inner basket, put the bag in and secure it using the built-in snap clips. Emptying it is the reverse.

The carry handle also means you can take the whole thing to the wheelie bin and empty it outside. Instead of having to carry a bag full of smelly litter through the house.

During our tests, we found that when we locked the bin shut, it locked in the odours as well as other models. That said, the waste compartment isn’t fully sealed like it is with the other models on this list. You need to open the lid to add more waste. Our ‘test cat’ had smelly poo so we got a whiff every time we opened it to add more.

Still, this model is very well-reviewed online by users so maybe we’re being picky.

The Competition

There are two very well-known brands that make cat litter disposal systems. Both of which we tested and are fantastic

Still, we haven’t included them.

They are;

  • The Litter Locker – After buying and testing the Litter Locker (and really liking it!) we couldn’t find it in stock anywhere.
  • The Litter Champ – Another fantastic product but again, we can’t find the Litter Champ in stock anywhere.

Amazon, Zooplus, etc, they all sold out. We’ve also read reviews from users who say they also can’t get hold of the refills because no one stocks them either.

We’ve since learned that they’re made for the American and Canadian markets.

In Conclusion

During our years of cleaning cat litter trays, we have seen very few of our clients use cat litter bins.

That said, the best cat litter disposal systems make cleaning your cat’s litter tray just that little bit quicker and easier. And you’ll significantly reduce your plastic waste which helps the planet.

In our opinion, they’re money well spent!
